Willie James Hogan, 75, affectionately known as "Joe," was born on August 15, 1950, in Monroe County, Mississippi. He departed this world on Thursday, November 27, 2025, at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, leaving behind a legacy of strength, love, and determination.
Joe proudly served in the United States Army as a Private 1st Class during the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1971. His service to his country was a point of honor in his life, exemplifying dedication and bravery during challenging times.
Following his military service, Joe found his calling in various roles, most notably in maintenance at Rayburn Foods and as a former employee at both the Burlington Northern Southern Railroad and True Temper Sports. His work ethic and commitment to excellence defined him, earning him respect and admiration from his colleagues.
Joe was a man of many interests. He relished playing football, basketball, and baseball, and his passion for sports was matched only by his love for the great outdoors, often enjoying fishing and hunting. These activities brought him joy and allowed him to create lasting memories with family and friends.
He cherished his family deeply and is survived by his sons, Terrence LaTrail Armstrong and Jason Tisdale; daughters Sharon Westbrooks, Karen Pruitt, Rachel Hogan, and Octavia Clark; sister Rev. Gloria Hogan - McKinney; uncles Arzell (Thelma) Wilson and Willie (Barbara) Ivy; aunt Birdie Thornton; twelve grandchildren; one great grandchild; and his companion and caregiver, Vera Hogan. In addition, he is remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whose lives he touched.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Henry Jeff Hogan, and mother, Sue Thornton-Hogan. He also preceded in death by his siblings, Mary Sue Hogan, Henry Earl Hogan, Bobby Wayne Hogan, and Willie Clifton Hogan, along with his grandparents, Willie Mae and Dosie Hogan, and Idella Ivy.
Visitation for Joe will be held on Friday, December 5, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Belle Memorial Funeral Home in Amory, Mississippi. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, December 6, 2025, beginning at 1:00 PM at Union Grove United Methodist Church in Nettleton, Mississippi.
Willie James "Joe" Hogan will be remembered for his unwavering spirit, his love for his family, and his contributions—both in service to his country and within his community. He leaves behind cherished memories that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who loved him.
